Norman 'Horse and Rider' Chape
Bronze, 9.92 grams, 9.92 mm. Circa 11th-12th century AD. A cast openwork dagger sheath fitting in the form of an L-shaped border with figure of a mounted knight in a helm amid foliage; attachment points in th corner of the border and pierced lug below the horse. Reference: published in Hammond, B. British Artefacts Volume 3 – Late Saxon Viking & Norman, p.76, fig.1.8.5-o. Fine condition. Provenance: from a County Durham collection.
