Extremely Rare Offa 'PEHTVALD' Portrait Penny
Silver, 1.15 grams, 17.83 mm. Circa 780-792 AD. Obverse: .+OFFA R.EX.+., bust Ac facing right with fine drapery and pellets on breast. Reverse: PEHTVAL.D, in angles of a Celtic cross containing a saltire imposed on a long cross fourchee in centre. Only three coins of this portrait type for the moneyer Peohtweald recorded with the Early Medieval Coin Corpus. N. 294; S. 905; CEB. 74. Listed as extremely rare in English Hammered Coinage by Jeffrey North. Slight nibble to edge, otherwise almost extremely fine.
