Ostrogothic 'Eagle-Head' Brooch Terminal
Copper-alloy, 5.48 grams, 24.92 mm. 5th century AD. A fabricated bird-head cellwork mount with discoid eye. A single triangular garnet cloison remains in the cell beneath the eye. Remains of the catchplate are present on the reverse. There is an old collector's label to the reverse with the accession number '92.176'. The style of cellwork is similar to that of the eagle brooch in the Domagnano treasure. Reference: cf. Domagnano material published in Reynolds Brown, K. Migration Art AD 30-800, New York, 1995. Fine condition. Provenance: from an important London collection, acquired 1992 inventory no.92.176 / cat.2028.
