Excessively Rare Roman 'Eagle' Brooch
Copper alloy, 4.14 grams; 20.73 mm. Circa 2nd-3rd century AD. Rare Roman brooch in the form of an eagle (Aquila) with its wings spread to the side and head facing left. The realistic plumage is inlayed niello with the rest of the surface being heavily silvered. This brooch probably has a legionary connection as the eagle was carried as its standard symbol in battle. No similar brooch published in Richard Hattat's books on Ancient Brooches. Extremely fine condition complete with pin. Found Thetford, Norfolk.
