Rare Roman 'Lion' Casket Leg
Copper alloy, 130 grams; 77.36 mm. Circa 1st-2nd century AD. Bronze casket leg in the form of a lion’s leg standing on a large round plinth. At the top of the leg there is the head of a lion cast in the finest detail; this then joins to a square sectioned hollow finial that would have been fitted to the base of a casket or chest. Ref: Benet's Artefacts of England & the United Kingdom; R99-0401. A beautiful piece in extremely fine condition. Ex old English collection.
