Roman 'Gold Braceletted' Aphrodite Statuette Fore-Arm 015162

Roman 'Gold-Braceletted' Aphrodite Statuette Fore-Arm and Hand
Silver and gold, 7.07 grams, 33.49 mm. 1st-4th century AD. A finely-made fore-arm and hand cast in silver. The delicately-modelled hand with its forefinger and little finger extended suggest that the figurine was of a female deity, as this pose was used on, for example, the Medici Venus statue, itself probably a copy of an original Greek figure of Aphrodite. The arm is decorated with a miniature gold bracelet formed from a square-section rod twisted along its length to form a shallow rotation. The arm expands at the elbow, suggesting that the figure wore a sleeved garment, but the fracture at this point makes it impossible to determine more. Reference: Beard, M. and Henderson, J. Classical Art: From Greece to Rome, Oxford, 2001. Provenance: from an old English collection, found continental Europe. Good very fine condition.
