Roman 'Aviform' Brooch
Copper-alloy, 7.64 grams, 34.12 mm. 2nd-3rd century AD. A Roman plate brooch in the shape of a bird with a chevron tail, folded wings and long neck; the head curls over so that the beak meets the leading edge of the left wing. Three ring-and-dot motifs decorate the wings and trunk. The bird is probably a goose or swan. Catch plate intact, pin lost in antiquity. Reference: bird brooches are discussed in Hattatt, R.
