Roman 'Charioteer' Pendant 014692
Roman 'Charioteer' Modelled Pendant & Chain
Gold, 7.34 grams, the pendant 26.52 mm wide, the chain 580 mm long. Roman 'Charioteer' pendant; circa 4th century AD. The oval hollow (originally wax-filled?) pendant in the form of two thin plates soldered to a wire 'ropework' frame, with attached suspension loop and a single granule at the junction. The front face of the pendant depicting the repousse scene of a galloping four-horse chariot and charioteer; the charioteer wearing full Roman armour and a crested helmet. The chain comprising double-looped links formed from a single hoop of flat strip, shaped and soldered at the centre, with a simple 'hook-and-eye' fastener. A lovely piece of Roman jewellery in excellent condition; the pendant showing slight crushing but not detracting from the appearance. Ex old European collection. This item is accompanied by an XRF ancient metal test certificate from Oxford X-ray Fluorescence Ltd.
