Roman 'Closed Loop' Dolphin Buckle and Plate
Copper-alloy, 16.68 grams, 40.23 mm. Circa 3rd-4th century AD. A cast copper-alloy buckle loop with tongue and plate. The loop is cast closed with opposed dolphin-head details flanking the couch. The couch is a ribbed bead between the open mouths of the beasts, which extend in a curve to form the loop. The tongue is flat and triangular. The plate is rectangular with three rivet holes and lightly incised linear ornament; two straps on the forward edge are rolled around the rear of the loop, and the tongue is set between them.
