Roman 'Composite' Enamelled Disc Brooch
Copper-alloy and enamel, 15.03 grams, 52.48 mm. Circa 2nd century AD. A cast copper-alloy plate brooch with enamel infill. The central element is a domed panel with ring-and-dot decorations and a central cell filled with radiating red and blue enamel. Surrounding this are four roundel arms, each with a central enamel-filled cell surrounded by enamel and glass inserts; from each arm radiate four further discoid cells with red and white enamel infill. To the reverse, the pin-lug and catchplate are in place. Reference: Hattatt, R. Ancient Brooches and Other Artefacts, Oxford, 1989 item 1610. Very fine condition. Provenance: found Bedfordshire, UK.
