Extremely Rare Roman 'Defixio' Lead Curse Plate
Lead, 13.52 grams, 30.04 mm. Circa 1st-3rd century AD. A square lead sheet with engraved folding lines to the rear and inscribed text to the inner face, the edges turned and folded inwards. The text was usually a curse or request for harm to be visited on a rival by the gods. Sometimes the folded sheet was nailed to a temple post, buried in the earth or thrown into water.
