Roman 'Heavy Duty' Bronze Key
Copper alloy, 45.68 grams, 61.87 mm. Circa 1st - 3rd century AD. A solid heavy duty tumbler lock key with a large suspension loop and pedestal that is detailed with two incised lines. The bit has two large teeth each having a circle cut in to the top. Ref: Guide to the Antiquities of Roman Britain by The Trustees of the British Museum, Fig 41. A good solid key with dark patination in very fine condition. Ex old English collection.

Copper alloy, 9.64 grams; 41.07 mm. Circa 1st - 3rd century AD. A smart well proportioned key from a tumbler lock, with a decorated shank and suspension loop above. The crooked bit has extremely long teeth to fit the tumblers in the lock, three lost in antiquity. Ref: Benet’s Artefacts, page 215 - 216, figs.
