Roman 'Looped Shank' Key
Copper-alloy and iron, 205 grams, 89.50 mm. Circa 2nd-3rd century AD. A very large cast key with iron shank and cast copper-alloy handle. The shank is right-angled, with toothing to the forward edge. The handle is a single solid square-section casting with a large loop above. Reference: cf large Roman key in Read, B. Metal Artefacts of Antiquity, vol.1, Langport, 2001 item 521. Very fine condition. Provenance: found Cambridgeshire, UK.
