Roman Family 'Figural Intaglio' Necklace Pendant & Earring Set
Gold, stone & glass, 5.17 grams, 35.29 mm. 2nd-3rd century AD. A matching necklace pendant and earrings set with carved design features of three wealthy Roman family members. Each face is housed in a rectangular openwork panel with incised line decoration. The two earrings have two glass beads supported by wire rods hanging from two loops. A ribbed loop enables suspension for the pendant, S-shaped tails are attached to the back of the earrings allowing the set to be worn. Reference: intaglio pendants are discussed in Roger, D. & Giroire, C. Roman Art from the Louvre, Manchester Vermont, 2007. Extremely fine wearable condition. Provenance: from a deceased estate, found Eastern Mediterranean in the late 19th century. This lot is accompanied by a positive XRF ancient metal test certificate from Oxford X-ray Fluorescence Ltd.
