Very Rare Roman 'Phalera' Military Pendant
Copper-alloy, 45.74 grams, 75.45 mm. 1st-2nd century AD. A convex dished cast plate with a separate central figural mount in the form of a fleshy male face with carefully sculpted hair. The display surface features concentric bands. On the upper edge a rtounded lobe is pierced to accept the wire attachment loop. The piece appears to have been created as a pendant in imitation of the phalerae military decorations awarded to distinguished servicemen and worn over their armour.
