Roman 'Polychrome Painted Plaster' Fresco Fragment
Plaster, 155 grams, 81x 62 mm. Circa 1st century AD. A well preserved thick coarse white wall plaster fragment, bearing the remains of a polychrome fresco with a painted design applied to the smooth finished surface in shades of coral pink, maroon and ochre. Reference: Casa Dell’Ara Massima or House of Pinarius or Casa di Narcisso. VI.16.15 Pompeii, excavated 1903. Very fine condition. Provenance: reputed to be from the ancient city of Pompeii in Campania, Italy. Acquired in the 19th century, ex Jeger collection, Switzerland.
