Roman 'Spoked' Plate Brooch
Copper-alloy, 7.47 grams, 37.04 mm. 2nd century AD. The brooch comprises a circular plate with incuse border surrounding a central panel of dark blue enamel decorated with six inset black-on-white enamel roundels. The central feature is a barrel-shaped knop with an enamel disc on the upper surface. Around the rim are six lobes each bearing an circular inset enamel panel. The spring-lugs and cathplate are intact. Brooches of this type are found across the borderlands of the Roman Empire from Britain to Pannonia (Hungary). Reference: Hattatt, R.
