Roman 'Suckling She Wolf' Plaque 020462

Roman 'Suckling She Wolf' Plaque 020462
Very Rare Roman 'Suckling She Wolf' Plaque
Copper-alloy, 4.63 grams, 55.96 mm. 3rd-4th century AD. A rectangular plaque, probably the decorative plate from a belt buckle. There are two piercings in the rear corners and another centrally close to the forward edge. The design features a quadruped with prominent ears and wide jaws, its tongue protruding and its head turned to the rear; its legs are firmly planted, its tail droops and three teats are shown beneath the belly. A tree is placed behind the beast's back, visible above and below. The ears and jaw suggest that the animal is a dog or more probably a wolf. Reference: Sear, D Roman Imperial Coins, VII Lyons 257;cf Sear 3894-3895. Very fine condition. Provenance: found Cambridgeshire, England.
