Roman 'Wolf's Head' Harness Mount
Copper-alloy, 39.65 grams, 49.25 mm. Circa 1st-2nd century AD. A cast copper-alloy harness mount in the shape of a wolf's head flanked by curved arms attached to a transverse bar below. The head is shown facing with annular eyes and tongue-shaped ears, each with a triangular recess. To the reverse, there is a sturdy D-shaped loop for attachment to the harness. The form is derived from the common heart-shaped mounts and pendants found on the equipment of early Roman cavalry regiments. Reference: Appels, A. & Laycock, S. Roman Buckles and Military Fittings, Witham, 2007, p.121. Very fine condition, complete. Provenance: from an old Cambridgeshire collection.
