Romano Celtic 'Openwork' Plate Brooch
Silver, 9.45 grams, 31.51 mm. 2nd-3rd century AD. The brooch is formed as a series of La Tène trumpet swirls in an elegant composition. Brooches of this type are thought to originate in Pannonia, the upper Danube and the Rhineland and are found mainly in modern Germany and Switzerland. On the reverse the lugs, pin and catchplate are all intact. Reference: Hattatt, R. Ancient Brooches and Other Artefacts, Oxford, 1989, p.162-5 and cf. no.1621. Very fine condition.
