Scandinavian Viking ‘Quintuple-Coil’ Spiral Ring
Copper-alloy, 4.37 grams, 22.43 mm. Circa 9th-10th century AD. A spiral-bound finger ring of Group II:1a. The central portion of the ring is a narrow flat band with punched decoration in the form of an oscillating herringbone motif; from this band extend finials formed as shallow D-section rods with pointed ends. The use of five passes (the central band plus two additional loops above and below) is unusual, where three passes are more common. This form of ring is typical of the eastern Baltic in the later Viking Age.
