A rare Anglo Saxon 'Two Faces', or Janus knife pommel. Bronze, 21.05 mm. Expertly crafted piece made in the 6th Century when the Anglo Saxons were clinging to the remnants of Roman civilization. A high quality piece like this would have been in use over a long period. Extremely Fine condition, with excellent patina.

The worship of Janus, the animistic spirit of doorways (januae) and archways (jani), dates back to Romulus and a period even before the actual founding of the city of Rome. Janus was the two faced god who "opened the gates of heaven to let out the morning, and closed them at dusk." Janus was worshipped as the god of all doors, gates and other entrances.

Some scholars regard Janus as the god of all beginnings and believe that his association with doorways is derivative. He was invoked as the first of any gods in regular liturgies. The month of January is named after him, and his festival took place on January 9, the Agonium.

"Janus was represented by a double-faced head. The paradox of Janus - Janus, is depicted with the two faces looking in opposite directions. This symbolizes the contradiction between past and present that cannot be reconciled into only one face."
