Tudor 'Foliate' Openwork Pendant Locket
Silver, 4.10 grams, 15.08 mm. Circa 16th-17th century AD. A cast pendant in the form of a cross flory composed from acanthus-leaf elements. The casting is in two halves so as to allow a small item to be enclosed, both halves are thick allowing the artist scope for carefully modelled leaf fronds. Reference: cf. decoration on a contemporary hook-fastener in Read, B. Hooked Clasps and Eyes, Langport, 2008 item 790. Very fine condition, suspension loop lost in antiquity. Provenance: from an old English collection.
