Viking 'Animal Mask' Buckle
Copper-alloy, 6.32 grams, 32.10 mm. 10th-11th century AD. A hinged, two-piece buckle, comprising a triangular beast-head with prominent brow and eyes above a D-shaped panel bearing Ringerike Style scrolled patterning developing into an integral pointed, triangular tongue. The D-shaped loop thickens on the outer edge to a second beast-head. The upper section is split longitudinally to accept the strap, with two small rivets still in situ.
