Viking 'Conical' Bullion Weight
Copper-alloy and iron, 12.64 grams, 20.22 mm. 9th-11th century AD. The weight is formed as a low cone with a thick collar at the apex surmounted by a discoid lobe, pierced for suspension. The flat underside reveals the rectangular iron core of the weight; covering an iron core with a copper-alloy shell was a common Scandinavian practice adopted from the Byzantine metrological system. The weight is about 1.5 of the standard Scandinavian units or ortugar of 8.22 grams. Reference: Hardh, B.
