Viking ‘Embedded Chip-Carved Triquetra' Gaming Piece
Lead, 16.08 mm; 9.86 grams. Circa 8th - 10th century AD. A lead disc with a dished top, into which is set a gilded chip-carved fragment of an Anglo-Saxon or Irish mount decorated with a triquetra. Such an ornate piece would have been used as a hnefi or king-piece in the board-game hnefatafl. Reference: Pollington, S.
