Extremely Rare Viking ‘Embedded Coin’ Gaming Piece
Lead, 8.60 grams; 16.97 grams. Circa 8th-10th century AD. A lead disc with a dished top, into which a silver coin of King Æþelræd II has been set. The piece would have been used as the hnefi or ‘king-piece’ from the game hnefatafl, or possibly as a merchant’s weight. Reference: Biggs, N. & Withers, P. Lead Weights and Pollington, S.
