Rare Viking 'Fylfot' Barrel Weight
Copper-alloy, 31.51 grams, 16.86 mm. 9th-11th century AD. A barrel-shaped weight of Scandinavian 'barrel' profile, formed as a copper-alloy casing around a denser iron core. On the upper face is a design of a hooked cross with annulet ends within two concentric pelletted bands; a similar design is on the lower face and there are punched-point triangles and radiating star designs on the sides. The weight is equivalent to four of the standard Norse ortug weights of 8.22 grams. Reference: cf. weights in Weber, K. Byzantinische Münzgewichte Materialkorpus für 1-Nomisma-Gewichte, Schwelm, 2009. Fine condition. Provenance: found Norfolk, England.
