Visigothic 'Garnet Cabochon' Radiate-Headed Brooch
Copper-alloy, 35.44 grams, 111 mm. early 6th century AD. A cast bow brooch with ornamented surface. The headplate is D-shaped with an outer band of bird-heads merging to form an openwork border, at the apex of which is an inset cabochon garnet. The bow is shallow, D-section with incised collars to the ends. The footplate is leaf-shaped with six discoid lugs at the angles and an ovoid finial. The surface of the headplate and footplate is ornamented with incised ring-and-dot ornament. To the reverse, the pin-lugs and catchplate are encased in the ferrous remains of the pin.
