Visigothic 'Square Loop' Buckle
Copper-alloy, 58.38 grams, 99.88 mm. Circa 6th century AD. A cast copper-alloy belt buckle with integral plate. The loop is square in plan with rounded corners to the slot. The plate is formed with concave sides and pointed rear edge, slightly dished. The tongue is formed with a curled tip to fit over the forward edge of the loop, and with a shield-shaped element to the rear. To the reverse are three pierced attachment lugs. Provenance: from an old English collection.
