Very Rare King Alfred The Great 'Viking Imitation' Saxon Penny
Silver, 0.66 grams; 17.73 mm. Circa 880-899 A.D. Obverse: ELFRED R, around cross pattee. Reverse: Blundered legend of moneyer’s name in two lines with pellet between. Recorded with the Fitzwilliam Museum at Cambridge University as EMC 2008.0353. S 1069; N 636. Almost very fine for issue and very rare. Found Wymondham, Norfolk. Only three other coins of this type with moneyers name blundered recorded with the Early Medieval Coin Corpus at Cambridge University. SOLD
